It's almost the most wonderful time of the year: striper spawning season.

Striped bass, also known as stripers, are one of the most sought-after game fish on the East Coast, famous for their size, fight, and taste. Their fascinating life cycle and migration pattern directly impact fishing opportunities.

The stripers' breeding schedule differs from year to year– the exact timing seems to be strongly influenced by water temperatures along the Atlantic coast.

In the northeastern United States, striped bass spawn from April to June. Understanding the stripers’ distinct seasonal movements—driven by breeding and environmental conditions—is essential knowledge for any dedicated angler. Here’s a general timeline for striper season:

Striper Spawning Season Timeline

April: Mature stripers return to the Hudson River to spawn

May: Post-spawn stripers begin to show up in New York and New Jersey

September – November: Stripers begin to feed more aggressively once the temperature drops, which makes them more likely to strike both live bait and artificial lures

Stripers Spring Migration

Striped bass are anadromous fish, meaning they spawn in freshwater but spend most of their lives in saltwater. Factors like water temperature, salinity, and flow conditions, contribute heavily to ideal spawning conditions.

Spawning and the Hudson River

Stripers typically begin their migration up the East Coast in the spring. However, the majority of spawning happens in the Chesapeake Bay area in mid-March and continues on into early May.

In New York, mature striped bass begin their migration from the Atlantic into the Hudson River when water temperatures reach approximately 60-68°F. The Hudson serves as one of the most crucial freshwater spawning areas for the species.

The Hudson estuary is an ideal location for stripers to reproduce because it offers a mix of fresh and brackish waters, which is critical to supporting the stripers’ early life stages. Spawning typically happens between West Point and Kingston.

What is Broadcast Spawning?

The males typically arrive first and wait for the larger, egg-laden females in clear, shallow waters with moderate currents.

When they arrive, the females release thousands—sometimes millions—of eggs over cobble, gravel, or sandy substrates. The males then fertilize the eggs externally. This process is called broadcast spawning and ensures a widespread dispersal of the eggs.

The fertilized eggs then adhere to the river bottom to incubate between 10-20 days before hatching, depending on water temperature. The newly hatched larvae will generally stay in the Hudson until the early fall when they begin to move out of the estuary into near-shore costal areas before eventually migrating deeper into the Atlantic.

Post-Spawning Migration

After spawning, it’s downriver and up the coast. Many stripers continue their migration south toward New York Harbor and Long Island Sound. Some continue north along the New England coast to summer feeding grounds.

Stripers often follow baitfish like bunker, herring, and shad along the coast. Some popular post-spawning fishing hot spots include:

  • Jamaica Bay

  • Montauk

  • North Shore of Long Island

Fishing for Stripers

Striped bass movements are dictated heavily by water temperature, food availability, and spawning instincts. Because their migration patterns are so predictable, knowing when and where to fish can significantly increase your chances of landing a trophy catch.

Below are a few key points to know for a successful day of striper fishing.

When is the Best Time to Fish for Stripers?

Fortunately, there’s a fairly large window for fishing stripers.

Early Season (March – April)

The stripers’ initial spring migration makes for excellent fishing grounds as the stripers are traveling upstream to spawn. Schoolie stripers (smaller fish under 28 inches) can be found near river mouths and estuaries, actively feeding as they prepare for the spawn.

Peak Season (Late April – Early June)

You’ll start to see more large fish appear the closer it gets to spawning. These fish tend to stay in the Hudson River and other freshwater tributaries before returning to the ocean.

Fall Migration (September through November)

After spending the summer feeding in the coastal waters of Long Island Sound and New England, stripers begin their southern migration in the fall. This season is often considered the best time for surf fishing, as large stripers move along New York’s shores in search of baitfish.

September – October

Stripers begin to feed more aggressively once the temperature drops, which makes them more likely to strike both live bait and artificial lures.

November

November is an angler’s final window of opportunity before most stripers head south for the winter. Montauk, the South Shore beaches, and Long Island Sound are prime locations for late-season stripers.

Where is the Best Striper Fishing?

New York is home to some of the best striped bass fishing spots on the East Coast. Whether you prefer fishing from a boat, shore, or pier, here are a few locations with prime opportunities for landing stripers throughout the year.

Hudson River

Best Time to Fish: March – June

Why It’s Great: The Hudson River serves as a major spawning ground for striped bass. Every spring, thousands of stripers migrate upriver, offering excellent fishing opportunities, particularly around Kingston, Poughkeepsie, and Albany.

Best Tactics: Live bait such as herring or cut bunker works well, as stripers are actively feeding in preparation for spawning.

East Moriches

Best Time to Fish: April – June

Why It’s Great: Moriches Bay offers diverse habitats, including deep channels adjacent to shallow flats, which are ideal for catching stripers. For anglers without access to a personal boat, local facilities like Silly Lily Fishing Station in East Moriches offer boat rentals, making it convenient to explore prime fishing spots throughout the bay.

Best Tactics: Live bait like spot fish or eels, as well as artificial lures, are commonly used to target striped bass in these waters.

Long Island Sound

Best Time to Fish: May – October

Why It’s Great: After the spring spawn, many stripers migrate to Long Island Sound, where they feed on abundant baitfish.

Best Tactics: Trolling with bunker spoons, casting topwater plugs, or jigging with soft plastics are all effective in these waters.

Montauk and South Shore Beaches

Best Time to Fish: September – November

Why It’s Great: Montauk is famous for its fall run, where massive schools of stripers chase baitfish along the beaches and rocky shorelines. This creates some of the best surfcasting action on the East Coast.

Best Tactics: Anglers often use topwater plugs, bucktail jigs, and live eels to target migrating stripers along the shoreline.

By understanding the best times, locations, and techniques, you’ll be well-prepared to reel in some of New York’s legendary striped bass. Whether you’re fishing the Hudson River in the spring or casting from Montauk’s shores in the fall, every outing can bring the thrill of a lifetime!
